Come join reowned lace knitting and handspinning instructor Galina Khmeleva, author of Gossamer Webs and The Design Collection, as she introduces you to the magical handspinning techniques of Russian knitters that ultimately result in the creation of arguably the most luxurious shawls and scarves found in the knitting universe. In this workshop, the emphasis will be on the spinning of luxury fibers, ie. cashmere, qiviut, pygora, buffalo etc., on a supported spindle and the significance of gauging the proper thickness and the length of these fibers, while learning the more economical use of luxury fibers, helping you conserve precious yardage.

Level: Adventurous beginner+

Ages:  13+ (students under 18 must be accompanied by an adult taking the class)

Materials Fee: $10 material fee is part of class cost and includes all the fibers used in class. Russian spindles and bowls are provided for use in class and available for purchase directly from instructor.

Please Bring: note-taking materials and a kitchen towel

  • Instructor Bio

    Galina Khmeleva is a Russian American artist and former student of Olga A. Fedorova, the famed Orenburg Lace expert.  For the past 30 years Galina has worked to build her business in the U.S. teaching and promoting easy to knit, heirloom quality pieces.  She is a huge proponent of U.S. grown fibers such as; cashmere, cashgora, Pygora, bison, qiviut, and paco-vicuna.  She has been featured in PieceWork, Spin Off, Knitter’s, and Cast On magazines all while traveling locally and internationally to promote her craft.  She has also published two books through Interweave Press, Gossamer Webs: The History and Techniques of Orenburg Lace Shawls 

    and The Gossamer Webs Design Collection.  When not knitting and teaching, Galina enjoys tending to her many and varied plants throughout her yard.  Since stay at home orders in March due to COVID-19, Galina’s garden has never looked better!

    Please note: Refunds are available until March 31, 2025. After March 31st, we will refund 50% of the class fee, and after April 12, 2025, refunds are no longer available.

    Transfers to other classes will be approved on an individual basis.
